It hasn’t always felt safe to feel as deeply as I feel. Sensitivity is a mixed bag; people who feel deeply can experience life through a lens that opens them to it all—the good, the bad, and the ugly—tuning in through all their senses, diving deeper into their humanity as an explorer of their inner world. But this is not how most humans do it.
Like many of you, I, too, grew up with these messages: “Emotions are only good when controlled,” “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps,” “Button your lips,” and “Don’t let your emotions get the better of you.” This message profoundly influenced me, suggesting that my deep feelings were something to be managed, tamed, or even stifled. As a result, I often found myself suppressing my emotions to fit in and not appear overly sensitive or weak. Suppressing my feelings is something I have spent a lifetime undoing, and I understand the challenges it presents.
As I have grown, I have come to recognize the extraordinary benefits of being sensitive. Sensitivity isn’t a flaw; it’s a profound strength. It’s an ability to connect deeply with others, experience life vividly and fully, and empathize with those around you on a level many cannot. This understanding empowers us to nurture and manage our sensitivity wisely.
I’ve learned that sensitivity enables me to notice subtle emotional shifts, experience art and beauty intensely, and offer genuine empathy.
Yet, it also means I am more susceptible to being overwhelmed by negativity and criticism.
This duality has required me to develop strategies to protect my emotional well-being. One of the most valuable strategies is setting healthy boundaries. This means learning to say no when needed, not overextending myself, and protecting my energy, which is crucial for maintaining emotional balance. Other strategies include practicing self-care and seeking supportive relationships through a like-minded community.
One of the pivotal shifts in my journey was challenging the old messages ingrained in me. I began to question, “What if my emotions aren’t something to control but something to honor?” This change in perspective allowed me to embrace my sensitivity and view them as a gift. It wasn’t about controlling my emotions by bottling them up but about understanding them, expressing them healthily, and using them to enrich my life.
To those who might be on a similar path, here are some strategies that have helped me navigate life as a sensitive person:
1. Mindfulness Practices: Regular meditation and deep-breathing exercises help me stay grounded and present.
2. Journaling: Writing down my thoughts and feelings provides clarity and helps me process my emotions constructively.
3. Setting Boundaries: Learning to say no and protecting my energy has been crucial in maintaining emotional balance.
4. Seeking Support: Finding a community of like-minded individuals and professional coaching guidance has been invaluable in understanding and cherishing my sensitivity.
Embracing sensitivity is a journey of self-discovery and acceptance. It has its challenges, but the rewards are profound. By honoring our deep feelings and learning to navigate the world with them, we can lead lives filled with authenticity, connection, and profound understanding. Let us embrace our sensitivity as the gift that it is and use it to enrich our lives and the lives of those around us.
To conclude, remember that the essence of true growth lies in self-acceptance. By nurturing self-love, you enrich your life and attract like-minded individuals who share and understand your journey. Embrace who you are, and in doing so, you’ll find a community that resonates with your spirit, providing support and companionship along the way. Your journey to self-love is a pathway to deeper connections and meaningful relationships.
All my love,
Sarah
