You Are the Expert on You

So often we don’t believe in our own power. We lose touch with that part of ourselves that believes we have the ability to change the way life looks. We hand over our power to someone else: a doctor, therapist, teacher, parent, friend, lover, or colleague. We count on them to tell us what is going on in our lives, but when it doesn’t work, we get frustrated. What to do? Become an expert on yourself.

The feedback we get from those around us can be valuable, but not when we have not developed an understanding of who we are first. When we are not in touch with our personal health, or our mental and spiritual well-being, the scales of life tip and it’s hard to gauge what’s real for us. It’s as though we are looking at our life through someone else’s lens, and this is a confusing perspective.

It is easy to understand how this happens. Imbalance shows up when we devote more time to interacting with our outer world than we do listening to what’s going on inside us. Although our inner voice is strong and clear, we go to great lengths to drown out what it is saying. Resist that impulse, and steer your attention inward.

When we take our attention from the outer circumstances of life, we tap into resources that are ever present. There you will find a treasure trove for your life.

Meditation is a great way to begin this journey,  but if you’re not ready, take smaller steps. Here are three simple ways to go inside:

  1. Scan: Before you get out of bed in the morning, do a body scan. Start with your toes—wiggle and stretch them and notice how they feel—then continue scanning the rest of your body to the top of your head. Whatever shows up, experience it, validate it and move on.
  2. Breathe: When discomfort is present in your life, stop everything you are doing and take 3 long deep breaths. Notice the energetic reset this brings to your experience. Practice this breath whenever something feels out of whack.
  3. Feel: Allow feelings in without judgment. This is a very challenging thing to do, but test it out and see what happens. Identify how you are feeling when discomfort appears and hold it like you would a small child. Validate the way you are feeling and assure yourself all is well. You may be surprised at how fast uncomfortable feelings dissipate when they are heard.

The only perspective we will ever have is our own, so make it as clear, concise, and truthful as possible. This way you will build a powerful foundation for everything else you do.

No one will ever know you as you know yourself. This is fact, and no one will ever be able to heal you as you can. When you really listen, you’ll hear the callings of your spirit yanking on your coattails to be heard. It is these callings that prompt us toward the true purpose of our life. From there a newfound faith, assurance, and clarity will guide your way on. Go inside, and from there you will become the expert on you.
