In the absence of self-care life becomes hard to focus on the simplest of tasks. Everything gets blurry when we leave ourselves out. We get overwhelmed with feelings that we are not proud of, like anger, resentment and judgement and life stops working at any level and becomes a survival game. It is possible to make room for joy, healing and happiness and unlearn the dysfunctional, self-depriving habitual patterns that make life feel so wretched. Once you set an intention to make time for yourself each day, in a place that feels safe and restorative, there is a natural unfolding and ease to caring for one’s self, and the results for many are miraculous.
Take your first simple step towards acts that heal, soothe and change you.
Create Sacred Space- A Place to Rest Your Heart
Let’s start this process by creating a place to rest your heart, a physical place somewhere in your home, a sacred space for YOU. Create it as though you were creating it for someone you cherish. Clean it, bless it and adorn it with the things you treasure most.
- Put objects around you that make you feel safe and comforted (photos, symbols of hope, stones, things that make you smile).
- Take a seat on a sheepskin (if you have one) or a natural fabric wool or cotton blanket. I also have an additional blanket available to wrap around me.
- Comfort is essential. Have a meditation pillow that allows you to feel relaxed in your space. (If sitting on the ground is not comfortable, find a stool or chair that allows your feet to be on the ground and your spine to lengthen)
- I also have a candle, matches, timer, Kleenex, journal, clock, and water nearby to support my time in my sacred space.
Time spent in your sacred space will give you the opportunity to reset, revitalize, and rebalance your life each day and relate to the deeper parts of who you are. Rest your heart in the safety and comfort of this reflective space. Go there each day, close your eyes, take deep cleansing breaths http://sarahbrassard.com/the-long-deep-breath/ and notice everything.
