Nectar of the Gods (Ayurvedic Ojas Restoration Drink)

Ojas, in the science of Ayurveda, is a superfine substance in the body that protects and nourishes all of the tissues and the entire nervous system. It is no less than the essence of life juice. A baby—happy and present with soft, rosy skin and clear, bright eyes—is the perfect representation of ojas. When stress is dominant, the air is dry, and diets are not very supportive, ojas can be depleted. This wonderful ojas drink is the perfect antidote. It is best enjoyed in the evening to rejuvenate, ground, and bring rest and well-being to your being. That’s why I call it the Nectar of the Gods! Feel free to adjust the spices to your liking. And don’t forget the importance of rest, exercise, walks in nature, gentle breathing, and laughter with friends and family for restoring ojas.

  • 10 raw almonds
  • 2 cups dairy or almond milk
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and/or star anise
  • ½ teaspoon ghee
  • 3 dried or fresh dates, pitted

Put the almonds in a small bowl and add water to cover by about 1 inch. Cover with a dishtowel and soak overnight. Drain, then remove the skins from the almonds: place each almond between your forefinger and thumb, press, and the skin will pop off. Discard the skins.

Pour the milk into a small saucepan, add the spices, place over medium heat, and bring just to a simmer. Turn off the heat, add the ghee, and leave for a moment for it to melt. Transfer to a blender, add the dates and peeled almonds and blend to break down the dates and almonds into small bits. Pour into mugs or glasses and serve immediately.
